Stephen F. Austin State University Core Lab
The Core Lab uses a combination of cores, cuttings, and geophysical data to create integrated models of the subsurface. We use experiential learning to help students gain geologic knowledge and skills to help with careers after graduate school. The Core Lab is able to measure elemental composition, bulk mineralogy and TOC using in house XRF, XRD and a muffle furnace. We have equipment to create thin sections as well as the research microscopes for analysis. In conjunction with the Physics Department, we are able to use SEM to observe microfabrics within the samples as well. Using these techniques, we are able to integrate, describe, and interpret the subsurface for reservoir analysis, basin analysis, critical mineral assessment, and depositional and diagenetic history.
Student ResearchStudents conduct integrated research in the core lab, ranging from undergraduate through graduate.
